Edwin Jennings

A memorial graveside service for Edwin Jennings, 70, of Murray, was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Murray City Cemetery, with Rev. Ricky Cunningham officiating. There was no visitation.

Mr. Jennings died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 5:55 p.m. at Murray-Calloway County Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1943, in Murray to the late George Kerby Jennings and Dorothy (Hagan) Jennings. He was married to Peggy (Hall) Jennings on Sept. 28, 1963.

He was a member of Hardin Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher with Ivy Tech, a Singer Sewing Machine dealer, and a fire chief for the Calloway County Rescue Squad in the late 1960s. He was a 1990 graduate of Murray State University and a 1961 graduate of Murray High School.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Kerby Jennings.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Hall) Jennings; three daughters, Renee Thurman and husband, L.T., of Dexter, Shawnee Hill and husband, Ronnie, and Cory Jennings, all of Murray; one brother, O.J. Jennings III and wife, June, of Shelbyville; one sister, Doris Frazer and husband, Fred, of Murray; six grandchildren, Kristie Blake, Holly Long, Emily Cope, David Hill, Gabby Hill and Timmy Thurman; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James Mac Smotherman

James Mac Smotherman, 76, of Hazel, Ky., died Friday, May 17, 2013 at Lourdes hospital in Paducah.

Mr. Smotherman was born in Calloway County on Oct. 15, 1936. to the late Rev. James Harold Smotherman and Opal Lassiter Smotherman.  

He was a retired educator and professional truck driver, as well as a Baptist minister for more than 17 years. He was a member of the Sinking Spring Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was the song leader.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. James Harold Smotherman and Opal Lassiter Smotherman.  

He is survived by his wife, Neta Gale Smotherman of Hazel; one daughter, Jennifer Schaffer of Sikeston, Mo.; one sister, Wanda Cole and husband Howard of Byhalia, Miss.; two grandsons, Doug and Conner Schaffer both of the St. Louis, Mo., area; one nephew and one niece.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray with Rev. Carl Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the South Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until funeral hour on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the funeral home.
